Making New Year’s resolutions is a great way to re-energize your self and focus on attaining a new personal goal. Two of the most common New Year’s resolutions are to lose weight and to begin eating a more healthy diet. The problem with New Year’s resolutions is that whilst they’re fun to make you can quickly lose interest in them, and many people believe if you break them once then there’s no point in reaching for those New Year’s goals any more. If you stick with it though (and try to climb back on when you fall off the wagon) then the New Year can be a perfect time to start living your life as a healthy new you. Eating better will give you more energy in all areas of your life, including for swimming. Looking for a few tips for starting your healthy eating New Year’s resolution, and for keeping it up? Here are some key tips on how to make a healthy eating plan and how to stick to it:
Control Your Portions
Portion control is a huge issue for much of the American populous: when you eat out in restaurants or takeaway joints the portions you are served are considerably larger than you actually need. This in turn makes you reassess the portions you serve at home, and you tend to find yourself serving up portions much bigger than you should. Rather than deprive yourself of the foods you love (even the unhealthiest ones) simply reduce your portions. A little bit of what you fancy does you good, but make sure not to overindulge. Eat just one cookie not the whole box, for example! If you’re struggling to downsize your portions then just downsize your plates and dishes instead: studies have shown that using smaller plates can help to curb overeating because your plate will still look full.
Keep Yourself Motivated
When you resolve to eat a more healthy diet it’s important to keep yourself motivated. Having a healthy lifestyle should be a lifelong commitment, so it should be expected that there will be days and weeks where you eat unhealthily. These occasional slip ups are OK as long as you continue to keep trying to focus on your healthy message. There are many ways you can keep yourself healthy. Why not add a weight loss blog or two to your reading list, to give you regular healthy eating recipes and ideas? Other ways you can help to keep yourself motivated are to set mini goals for yourself (such as to eat five homemade and healthy evening meals a week) and then reward yourself when you reach these goals.
Cut Down on The Salt!
The recommended daily amount of salt you should have in your diet is just 6 grams a day, but the average American eats almost double this amount of salt every day. Salt isn’t a particularly healthy thing to have in your diet. It can lead to raised blood pressure, bloating and water retention. Pre-processed foods and take out foods tend to contain the highest levels of salt: they’re also very unhealthy foods, giving you double the reason to cut them from your diet. If you can lower the salt in your diet not only will it help you to maintain your weight it can also help to lower your risk of heart disease. If you do a lot of swimming or other exercise, and are a healthy weight, you might think there's nothing to worry about in terms of your diet. Hidden dangers like excess salt consumption, however, can affect people of all shapes, sizes and fitness levels.
Cut Back on the Amount of Alcohol You Drink
Finally, there’s no point in eating healthily if you’re not drinking healthily too! Try to ensure you drink the recommended eight glasses of water every day, and cut down on the amount of alcohol you drink. After cigarettes, alcohol is one of the unhealthiest things you can put into your body. Drinking alcohol increases your risk of memory loss, depression, and even suffering from seizures. You’ll be amazed at how much more healthy and alert you will feel if you give up alcohol completely, even if for just a short period of time.
